The 30-year-old joined Arsenal from Chelsea last summer after falling out of favour at Stamford Bridge, but he has not fared much better in north London. Sterling has started just three of the eight Premier League matches in which he has played, most recently coming off the bench late on in the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday.

According to , insiders at Arsenal say the ex-Liverpool and Manchester City star is suffering a crisis of confidence, resulting in him overthinking when he is on the ball. Gunners coach Mikel Arteta is not writing him off, however, and understands that injuries have hindered his progress this season.

"I would like him to play much more as I think he can impact the team in a very good way. He’s very good in the dressing room and is absolutely desperate to play. Hopefully, we can change it," Arteta said in December.

Sterling was one of many players who were quickly dropped from the squad once coach Enzo Maresca arrived at Chelsea. The ex-Leicester boss publicly urged him and fellow England international Ben Chilwell to leave the club, resulting in a late switch to their London rivals for the winger.
